Getting started with Ask Trace

Use Ask Trace effectively from day one

Written by Trace Team Updated 14-04-26

Who this is for

Teams using the Ask Trace assistant to investigate performance, journeys, channels, and conversion movement.

Before you begin

  • You need access to a site in the Trace dashboard.
  • Your workspace should have enough AI credits (or on-demand enabled).
  • Make sure your site is sending events.

How to open Ask Trace

  1. Open your site in the dashboard.
  2. Use Ask Trace from the site navigation.
  3. Start with one concrete question and include timeframe or segment context.

Prompting best practices

  • Be specific: include timeframe, channel, page, campaign, or conversion type.
  • Ask for comparisons: “this week vs last week,” “organic vs paid.”
  • Ask for an action: “what should I check next?”

What to expect in answers

  • A direct response first.
  • Supporting context from journeys/events.
  • Follow-up prompts to continue investigation.

Troubleshooting

  • No response or interrupted stream: refresh and resend the question.
  • Low-confidence answer: narrow your prompt and include a timeframe.
  • Out of credits: top up credits or enable on-demand billing in settings.
