Count clicks on links to another website

Updated 22 October 2026

What to type

Add a result with Link out to another site and type the website the link goes to, like booking.com. That is all Trace needs. You do not need the button text, the page or the full address.

If you paste a full address, Trace keeps only the website: https://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/the-swan.html becomes booking.com, and every link to booking.com counts, whichever page it opens.

Which clicks count

A click counts when someone on your site follows a link to that website:

  • The website or any of its subdomains. booking.com counts links to booking.com, www.booking.com and secure.booking.com.
  • Any link, whatever it says. A button reading Book now, a logo or a plain text link all count, as long as it is a link to that website.
  • In the same tab or a new one.

These do not count:

  • A different website with a similar address. booking.com does not count mybooking.com, or a link to another site that only mentions booking.com in its address.
  • A button that is not a link. Some buttons open the other website with a script rather than a link. Trace only sees links. To check, right click the button, choose Inspect, and look at the highlighted line: a link starts with <a and has href="https://..." with the other website in it. If it is not a link, use When they click a button or link with the button’s class or id instead. See Find a button or link’s class or id.
  • A link to a file, such as a PDF on another website. Trace counts it as a download instead. See Count file downloads.
  • A link inside a widget shown in a frame from another website, such as a booking widget. Trace cannot see clicks inside it.
  • A link marked data-trace-no-outbound="true", which tells Trace to leave it out.

Check it works

  1. Save the result.
  2. On your site, click the link. If your site asks about cookies, accept them first, or the visit is not counted.
  3. Open Conversions. The result shows as seen once it has happened.
